MANDO DIAO
Mando Diao – the Swedish five piece, two-lead singer, explosive band – is spinning on a worldwide tour that never seem to end, preaching their musical gospel to a an amazed audience wherever they go. Mando Diao seem to have doubled their European live audience every month since they started playing together. After performing this year at Germany’s largest festival Rock Am Ring, in front of 80.000 die hard fans, they should see another doubling of the audience as a whopping challenge.
Back in 1999 Björn Dixgård, Mando’s softly-spoken, loud-singing singer, nervy, charismatic lead singer Gustaf Norén, energy packed drummer Samuel Giers and showman bassist Carl Johan Fogelklou – formed Mando Diao, later complete with organist Mats Björke, and they set about playing all seven local clubs and the local petrol stations in their home town and by the time they were ready to explode out of Borlange and onto the Stockholm rock scene it was 2001.
Mando Diao’s 2002 debut album ‘Bring ‘Em In’ was an instant hit. The young people loved the new sound and the album went gold in Japan, Sweden and Germany and caused a splash wherever it was released. Hence Mando Diao set out on the wonkiest five years of touring imaginable. With 200 concerts a year they have seen every corner of the world, but mostly during the night, just before dawn, after the gigs, in what they call the Ochrasy state.
Second album ‘Hurricane Bar’ released in 2004 also became a huge hit across the world with hits like God Knows, You Can’t Steal My Love and Down In The Past. The album was produced by Richard Rainey, veteran of U2’s mixing desk.
With ‘Ode To Ochrasy’, released 2006 however, Mando Diao finally snatched control of their own runaway machine and produced the third album themselves, and a monster of a ‘concept album’ emerged. Fourteen tracks, each dedicated to a different character they’ve encountered during their tours and wrapped up in artwork painted by a ten-year-old artist from their hometown in 1959, described by their record label as “a red wine throw-up”.
With a relentless knack for the gut-twisting pop hook, Mando Diao’s albums are both vibrant and unique, surprising and genre-shredding, able to blow the roof off an arena and rock the average Brummie toilet venue. In a word: impeccable.
During 2007 Mando Diao have further extended their impact among all music lovers in the world, not least in USA where they played at the legendary Coachella Festival earlier this year, followed by a sold out headline tour and a performance at the Late Night w. Conan O’Brien only to head back to Europe for another summer packed with at least 30 festival performances, a few headline shows and a few more hours in the Ochrasy state of mind.
Mando Diao’s 4th Album Never Seen The Light Of Day was released in November 2007.
